Membership eligibility in The American Legion is based on honorable federal active duty service with the U.S. Armed Forces between -- April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I) and, with the passage of the LEGION Act (Let Everyone Get Involved In Opportunities for National Service Act),
*December 7, 1941 to date (Start of WWII to the present)
*Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have served honorably (proof required) are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States
